Why buy a milligram scale?
Maybe you’re weighing out supplements, fine jewelry, or medicine where every milligram is important and can mean the difference between performance, taste, or hundreds of dollars.

TDLR – Best Milligram Scale of 2023
Smart Weigh Premium Digital Milligram Scale
50-gram capacity, battery-powered, 2 calibration weights, tweezers, 3 weighing trays, carry case, very accurate.
How to Choose a Digital Scale?
If you need to weigh large objects (think more than 50 grams), on a consistent basis, then perhaps a precision digital scale isn’t right for you. You may need a kitchen scale to accommodate larger items.
Generally speaking, the greater the scale’s range, the larger the increments, and vice versa. If, on the other hand, you need very small increments for very accurate readings, think increments of 0.01, then a milligram scale may be right for you.
These scales can weigh tenths or even hundredths of a gram, and some can even convert the unit of measurement into carats, oz., and grams with the push of a button… Which may be perfect for gold, gems, diamonds, and other types of jewelry.
Tare / Calibration Function
A quality scale will have a tare feature that allows for net weight readings. Perhaps you need to put the item or ingredients that you’re weighing into a plate or bowl. Well, you can account for the extra weight of the bowl with a tare feature (sometimes referred to as a “Zero” button). Just place the bowl on the scale and press the tare button to reset the displayed weight back to zero.
You can also use the tare feature to measure several items at once by placing the item on the scale, pressing the tare button to reset the display back to zero, then placing the next item on the scale until you’re finished weighing your items.
Calibration works in a very similar way it just includes the use of calibration weights that you set the scale with at different levels so that it is even more accurate. This is not something that is included with all digital scales though. Read our guide on how to calibrate your scales here.
Units of Measurement
Many scales allow measurement in different unit weights: from carats, ounces, and grams to carats, pounds (lbs.), and grains. You will need to make sure that the scale you choose has the correct units that you will be using.
Getting a scale with the correct units is much easier than having to convert it later.

While this digital scale may not look like much due to its small design it packs a punch where it counts. Firstly it has one of the higher capacities of the scales we have featured here coming in at 100g.
It has dual power capability that only this model has, allowing it to be powered simply with 2 AAA batteries like many other scales on this list but it also includes a USB connection so it can be powered from any USB power source. We love this feature because we know how annoying it is when your batteries are dead and you just want to make a measurement.
It comes with all the basics like a calibration weight, and tare function, and can easily switch between 8 common measurement units meaning that this will fit almost anyone’s situation. It also comes with all the common accessories, like a measurement tray, some tweezers, calibration weights, and of course a USB cable. we just wish that it also included a carry case.

Cheap Digital Milligram Scale – RASSE Pocket Scale
For those who don’t necessarily need a large amount of weighing capacity, but rather a precise and accurate scale good for weighing small items like jewelry, this inexpensive little milligram scale could be what you are looking for.
It can weigh up to 50 grams in increments of 0.001 grams. Now, take it with a grain of salt when you see most manufacturers state this level of accuracy because typically only scientists using lab scales costing thousands of dollars offer that level of consistent precision.
That being said users of this scale have reported that it works just as well as other milligram scales that we have on this list. That’s saying a lot for the cheapest one we could find. so fear not if you are just looking for a budget option.
Nevertheless, it’s equipped with a draft shield to prevent air currents and comes with everything you need: a weighing pan, tweezer, and a 50g calibration weight. Not bad for a very affordable scale.
Features: It has a tare feature to ensure you get NET readings, PCS, a HOLD function to lock in your weight readings, auto shut off, and can count in any number of units including carats, ounces, grams, dwt, and gn.
Capacity: Since it can weigh up to 50g, it could work for even weighing heavier jewelry such as gold and gemstones and takes 2 AAA included batteries.
|0.001 grams||Tare + calibration weight included, measurement tray, backlit LCD||g, oz, ozt, dwt, ct, gn/gr||2xAAA|
- Cheapest Milligram Scale Available
- Has a Calibration Function
- Very small and portable
- Included calibration weight
- Capacity only 50 grams
Portable Lab Scales – KUBEI USB Rechargeable
This is a quite unique model of digital milligram scales as this one actually has an internal rechargeable battery that can be recharged via USB. This is something we love as a feature because so many devices are charged via USB these days that it is trivially easy to find a charge point.
It comes with all the other basic accessories and features you would expect in a digital scale like this, including a 10g calibration weight, tweezers, a weighing tray, and of course the USB charging cable. Of all the others on this list, this one is up there as one of the best purely for the fact that it has a rechargeable battery.
Unlike most other milligram scales, this one has a capacity of up to 100g. Most others max out at 20g or 50g so this is a great chance for a scale this small and cheap to measure all the way up to 100g while still being super accurate.
If you need a highly accurate milligram scale that will be portable and just a great combination of features then look no further. If this unit had a carry case then we may even put this one at the top of the list.
|0.001 grams||Rechargeable internal battery, Tare, calibration weight, backlit LCD||g / oz / ml / ozt / dwt / lb / ct / gn / tl||Rechargeable battery via USB|
- 100gram capacity
- USB rechargeable
- Easy to use
- Very portable
- No carry case
Lab Milligram Scales (Analytical Balance)
If you are looking for milligram scales with some more accuracy and reliability than the portable milligram scales above then look no further. For a high-precision digital scale that can be installed permanently to give consistent high-quality readings an analytical balance is best. They are the best scales for a chemist, doctor, herb sales, jeweler, or other use where you need consistent high accuracy.
If you are looking for more like this one then have a look at our list of the best analytical balances.
Use and Maintenance of Digital Miligram Scales
Make sure you’re at room temperature. Allow your scale to warm up for a few minutes. Metal contracts in the cold so keeping your machinery away from windows that may carry a draft, fans, or otherwise cooler environments and giving it some time to warm up will allow for the most accurate readings.
Cheap scales may turn off after only 90 seconds, but again, try to let the scale warm up for at least 30 seconds if you’re in a rush.
Be sure to measure on a stable flat surface free of noise or vibrations and be sure that you’re not directly on any carpet or soft material.
When not in use, your scale should read zero. If it’s above or below, then you need to calibrate your scale. These small weights are usually supplied with the device and should be used often to ensure that you are getting the most accurate reading as major movements, bumps, and shocks can throw your scale readings off.
Caring for your digital scale
As with any digital device, the scale should be kept clean and free of dust and residue. This is especially important when measuring small amounts as the slightest issue could cause a misreading.
Whether you’re measuring out gold, coffee, medicine, or alternative medicine ;), there is a scale for you.
A quick primer on the metric system for your alternative medicine fans.
1 gram = 1000 milligrams. 1 gram is a very small unit of measurement. We’re talking about a single-dollar bill or a paper clip. You may need specificity down to 0.1g or even 0.01g but anything beyond that is probably overkill.
There are 28 grams in an ounce. Many uh-medicinal suppliers already know this of course. When you buy an eighth, you are buying 3.5 grams.
In a nutshell, determine the range (ie the smallest to largest item) that you’ll need your scale to accommodate as well as the level of precision you’ll require, and then base your decision on the design, price, and ease of use.
