Best Milligram Scales

American Weigh Scales GEMINI-20 Portable MilliGram Scale

We scoured the internet searching for reviews of the best digital scales that offer accuracy down to the milligram level. We came up with a list of the top 10 milligram scales. One or more of the scales below should be exactly what you need to get the job done.

Why buy a milligram scale?

Maybe you’re weighing out supplements, fine jewelry, or medicine where every milligram is important and can mean the difference between in performance, taste or hundreds of dollars.

If you don’t have time to look through our whole list, then you may want to check out the My Weigh iBalance 2600. It has a capacity of 2600 grams and measures down to the 0.1g level.  It has a solid and functional design, an easy to read display, and tare and count functions to boot. Our #2 spot goes to the American Weigh Scales GEMINI 20

How to Choose a Digital Scale?

Capacity

If you need to weigh large objects (think more than 50 grams), on a consistent basis, then perhaps a precision digital scale isn’t right for you. You may need a kitchen scale to accommodate larger items.

Generally speaking, greater the scale’s range, the larger the increments and vice versa. If, on the other hand, you need very small increments for very accurate readings, think increments of 0.01, then a milligram scale may be right for you.

These scales can weight tenths of even hundredths of a gram, and some can even convert the unit of measurement into carats, oz., grams with the push of a button… which may be perfect for gold, gems, diamonds, and other types of jewelry.

Tare Feature

A quality scale will have a tare feature that allows for net weight readings. Perhaps you need to put the item or ingredients that you’re weighing into a plate or bowl. Well, you can account for the extra weight of the bowl with a tare feature (sometimes referred to as a “Zero” button). Just place the bowl on the scale and press the tare button to reset the displayed weight back to zero.

You can also use the tare feature to measure several items at once by placing the item on the scale, pressing the tare button to reset the displayed back to zero, then placing the next item on the scale until you’re finished weighing your items.

Units of Measurement

Many scales allow measurement in different unit weights: from carats, ounces and grams to carats, pounds (lbs.) and grains.

And without further ado, here are our top picks:

My Weigh iBalance 2600 YT

MyWeigh GemPro 2502

This is a top of the line scale that provides both long term durability and reliable accuracy.

It’s made of stainless steel with durability so good that it’s backed by a 30 year warranty. It has a large and easy to read bright backlit LCD display and ample space for weighing any number of items.

It can support up to 2600 grams / 91 oz. and measures in increments of 0.1 grams. It offers weight measurement in several different units such as pounds, ounces, carats and grains etc…

It has a tare function of course, which can subtract the weight of any bowl or tray (included) you use to hold your ingredients or objects. It supports a counting feature and an auto shut off feature to conserve battery life (can also be plugged in)

For technical readers, it uses a 26000 division load cell rather than using “multiplied sensors,” it has auto zero tracking, and can compensate for changes with an integrated thermistor. Full review here

WAOW Digital Milligram Scale – Reloading Jewelry Scale

WAOAW Digital Milligram Scale 50 X 0.001g Reloading Jewelry Scale

For those who don’t necessarily need a large amount of weighing capacity, but rather a precise and accurate scale good for weighing small items like jewelry, the WAOW Digital Jewelry scale may be just what you’re looking for.

It can weigh up to 100 grams in increments of 0.001 grams/ 0.1gn. Now, take it with a grain of salt when you see most manufacturers state this level of accuracy because typically only scientists using lab scales costing thousands of dollars offer that level of consistent precision.

Nevertheless, it’s equipped with a draft shield to prevent air currents and comes with everything you need: a weighing pan, tweezer and a calibration weight. Not bad for a very affordable scale.

Features: It has a tare feature to ensure you get NET readings, PCS,  a HOLD function to lock in your weight readings, auto shut off, and can count in any number of units including carats, ounces, grams, dwt, and gn.

Capacity: Since it can weigh up to 100g, it could work for even weighing heavier jewelry such as gold and gemstones and takes 2 AAA included batteries.

– U.S. Solid  Digital Analytical Balance Precision Scale for Labs

Torabl agzn120 analytical balance

Lastly, for those of you who really need commercial level accuracy without breaking the bank (keep in mind most lab scales cost several thousands of dollars), there is the Torbal Analytical Balance Scale.

It has a capacity of 60g and more importantly, it offers true precision down to 0.0001g at +-0.002 accuracy. There are very few reasons why you would need a scale this accurate and precise down to the sub milligram level but hey, we thought we’d mention it for the few of you that do.

It has a draft shield, stainless steel pan, LCD backlight, tare feature, part count function, and measures in ounces, carats, grams and pounds.

What to Keep In Mind When Using A Digital Scale

Make sure you’re at room temperature. Allow your scale to warm up for a few minutes. Metal contracts in the cold so keeping your machinery away from windows that may carry a draft, fans or otherwise cooler environments and giving it some time to warm up will allow for the most accurate readings.

Cheap scales may turn off after only 90 seconds, but again, try to let the scale warm up for at least 30 seconds if you’re in a rush.

Be sure to measure on a stable flat surface free of noise or vibrations and be sure that you’re not directly on any carpet or soft material.

Calibration

When not in use, your scale should read zero. If it’s above or below, then you need to calibrate your scale. These small weights are usually supplied with the device and should be used often to ensure that you are getting the most accurate reading as major movements, bumps, and shocks can throw your scale readings off.

Caring for our Scale

As with any digital device, the scale should be kept clean and free of dust and residue. This is especially important when measuring small amounts as the slightest issue could cause a misreading.

Whether you’re measuring out gold, coffee, medicine or alternative medicine ;), there is a scale for you.

A quick primer on the metric system for you alternative medicine fans.

1 gram = 1000 milligrams. 1 gram is a very small unit of measurement. We’re talking s ingle dollar bill or a paper clip. You may need specificity down to 0.1g or even 0.01g but anything beyond that is probably overkill.

There are 28 grams in an ounce. Many uh…medicinal suppliers already know this of course. When you buy an eighth, you are buying 3.5 grams.

In a nutshell, determine the range (ie the smallest to largest item) that you’ll need your scale to accommodate as well as the level of precision you’ll require and then base your decision on the design, price, and ease of use.
