Fish Weighing Scales

Choose the Right Fishing Scale for Accurate Weighing

Fishing scales are essential tools for any angler, whether you are a recreational or professional fisherman. Accurate weighing of fish is not only necessary for bragging rights but is also important for conservation purposes.

In this article, we will discuss the different types of fishing scales and how to choose the right one for your needs.

Types of Fishing Scales

There are several types of fishing scales available on the market, each with its own set of features and advantages:

  1. Mechanical Scales: These scales are traditional and operate using a spring-loaded system. They are durable and can handle heavy loads, but they are not as accurate as digital scales.
  2. Digital Scales: Digital scales use sensors to provide accurate weight measurements. They are easy to read, lightweight, and portable, making them a popular choice among anglers. Digital scales are available in various sizes and weight capacities.
  3. Hanging Scales: Hanging scales are a type of digital scale that can be attached to the fish by a hook. They are convenient and easy to use, but they can be challenging to read if the fish is moving around.
  4. Platform Scales: Platform scales are larger and more robust than other types of fishing scales. They are ideal for weighing larger fish or multiple fish at once.

Factors to Consider When Choosing a Fishing Scale

  1. Accuracy: Accurate weighing is critical, so it is essential to choose a scale that provides precise measurements.
  2. Weight Capacity: The weight capacity of the scale is another critical factor to consider. Make sure to choose a scale that can handle the weight of the fish you are likely to catch.
  3. Durability: Fishing scales can be exposed to harsh weather conditions and saltwater, so it is essential to choose a durable scale that can withstand these elements.
  4. Portability: If you plan to travel with your fishing scale, consider its size and weight. Digital scales are typically more portable than mechanical scales.
  5. Ease of Use: Choose a scale that is easy to use and read, even in low light conditions.

How to Use Fish Weighing Scales

Among some of the most important items to have when fishing are fish weighing scales, as we mentioned above. The best fish scales will give you an accurate weight of what you have caught.

A digital fish scale is the best option today. But how do you use it properly?

First of all, make sure you have everything ready with you, so you don’t have your fish suffocating while preparing your items. Imagine it is you holding your breath underwater, and that is how the fish must be feeling outside the water.

Once you have your fish out, you can pop the scale’s hook on the upper part of the fish’s lip. There is a thin layer there, right by its nostrils.

Then, let it down so the scale can weigh it. Please do not touch the fish so that you can get a proper weight; hold the scale by its handle.

Another option is to insert the hook under the gill plate. However, many fishermen prefer not to open any holes in the fish and use lip grips instead.

If you decide on lip grips, weigh them alone before weighing the fish because they will vary the results.
